Hi everyone!
It's been a while since I did my last local hike. Hiking during the week was a pretty big hallmark of my personal Bay Area experience and weekends could be reserved for bigger hikes!
But on this fateful Sunday, I mustered up my forces (esteemed subscriber Matt Sergeant Jewison) and we made the hour and twenty minute train ride up to Cold Spring, NY from Grand Central.
My hiking on the east coast is quite limited — we did a few hikes in Acadia National Park but this was a true east hike. The trailhead is about a mile away from the train station, and the first two miles or so was just straight uphill.
Now, this is something a consider a hiker's conundrum — is it better to start with a steep ascent then a gradual descent? Or the other way around? I'm typically a fan of the former since I usually have more energy in the beginning, and when I saw some people coming down the rocky trail ... let's just say they did not look like they were having a good time.
Sadly there was a lot of low hanging clouds so we couldn't see all the way to Manhattan, but I was able to get a peek of West Point! Wasn't sure where it was. But didn't expect to be hiking right next to it.
The rest of the hike was fairly reminiscent of a rainforest, right up to the snake.
Would recommend!
museum of the week
Some museums I go to quite often. And I do be going. I went to The Met again. Shocker!
This time I hung out around the medieval art and Renaissance art area. I usually go straight to the second floor but decided to spread my wings a bit.
I've been putting a little more effort into reading A History of Christianity by Diarmaid MacCulloch so looking at the statues of the saints were rather interesting. I did find it curious that there was mainly female saints portrayed. I'm sure there were many of each gender, but the female saints had some hardcore backstories. One is always depicted with a dragon because she was apparently SWALLOWED by one (Saint Margaret). Metal!
I am very tired so here are some more pictures.
