It’s officially Friendsgiving season! For some reason there are a few going on earlier on this month but I’m assuming there will be even more. And for those esteemed subscribers being invited to friendsgivings, I think the biggest worry amongst you all is WHAT IN THE WORLD WILL YOU BRING.
FEAR NOT esteemed subscribers, as I have documented some of the dishes that I’ve seen at the friendsgivings I’ve attended this past weekend. Big thank you to esteemed subscribers Emily Ding and Leo Liu for inviting me to the respective events!
turkey: the star of the weekend
Who said Gen Z was non-committal? Or not ambitious? Most importantly: who said turkey had to be dry??? Shoutout to esteemed subscriber Leo Liu for this amazing turkey for friendsgiving. Legitimately might not ever have had this good of a holiday bird!
the staples: mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, cornbread
Mashed potatoes are usually a little more involved — but esteemed subscriber Colleen McGuinness knocked hers out of the park! She made a huge aluminum tray of it (pro tip: if you’re taking the train to a friendsgiving they make them in smaller sizes!) and it was mostly demolished by the end of the night.
Esteemed subscriber Emily Ding also came out strong with a layered cornbread casserole with cranberry sauce and something else on the bottom! She hosted it in her building but brought it out in a very nice red Le Creuset pan.
asian style: banh mi, oil rice
Someone at one of the friendsgivings made an entire stack of banh mi … like damn dawg chill out!!! I also made some Asian food! I made oil rice (油飯), which is made out of some delicious glutinous rice.
dessert: cookies, peach cobbler, l’industrie pizza
Sure — you can make chocolate chip cookies. But if you’re like esteemed subscriber Jennifer Wang and you love matcha you will bring some match chocolate chip cookies to the table! And execute!!!
In a fruitier twist, esteemed subscriber Akshay Pawar tapped into his Southern roots and pulled out an excellent peach cobbler. Esteemed subscriber Harish Bhaskar also brought pizza as a dessert — mainly because it came a little later.

I need to stop writing these right before I go to bed. What did you all make for friendsgiving/are going to make for friendsgiving? Write in the anonymous subscriber news link!
museum of the week
This is not really a museum but hey I am stretching out this trip as long as I can! When I was in Singapore about to go up to the Marina Bay Sands observation deck I noticed a four wall panels. Each with some historical information about Marina Bay Sands. And thus, I present to you all the Marina Bay Sands museum:

I don’t know why but I think I just assumed that it had been around for a lot longer than 2012! I guess I was projecting my knowledge about Taipei 101 (the other large modern Asian landmark building I know), but it’s cool! And very interesting that such a new building has already become so iconic.
Actually in the process of learning how new Marina Bay Sands is I found that the Merlion statue (which I actually did not see this trip lol) is also very new — built in 1972. Which to be fair is quite old but it was moved to its now-iconic location in 2002.
Going up to the top, the view of the city was amazing. Too bad I couldn’t appreciate it too much due to my fear of heights! Another fun fact about it is apparently the casino was supposed to be symmetrical on the top but it looked too similar to a Chinese funeral tablet so they lopped off one end. Fun!

animal of the week
In a bit of a somber animal of the week, I’d like to dedicate this week’s to my uncle and aunt’s dog Sophie who passed away this week.
Sophie was a crazy dog — almost too smart for her own good. But that’s what we loved about her! When I was ten, I remember hanging out with Sophie in my uncle’s backyard which allegedly had an invisible electric fence on. And Sophie, being the ever-so-smart poodle mix she was, decided to apply the scientific method:
- Question: Is the invisible electric fence on?
- Hypothesis: It’s off.
- Experimentation: Cross the alleged electric fence border
- Result: electric fence is off!
A few minutes later, residents of Westchester County watched as a barefoot Asian kid ran after a curly-haired brown poodle mix, sprinting through major roads into the quieter side streets. I eventually caught up to Sophie, but only after she waited for me to catch up a few times then ran off again.
I’ll always remember chasing after Sophie: the feeling of concrete under my feet, hoping desperately she would get tired and just lie down while Sophie was having the time of her life running free through the streets of the suburbs.
Now you can run free Sophie :’) I’ll catch up later.
