I don’t really have anything on top of my mind lately. It’s been getting colder here in New York and the trees that were orange are starting to drop their leaves. When I got back from my vacation I decided to take a morning walk through Central Park and look at the orange leaves. The leaves were not really that orange but with the power of photo editing it looks amazing.

I guess one thing I can talk about is how I’ve been on a bit of a fitness journey! Inspired by esteemed subscriber Carolyn Chen (my sister), I have engaged in the “Great Lock In of September to December 2025.” Tracking macros, getting a personal trainer (expensive but worth it), biking more. They’ve all culminated in me losing about 12-13 pounds!

As part of this lock in I also decided to get reading. This part has not been as successful — I’ve only read three books:

  1. Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami
  2. The Vegeterian by Han Kang
  3. (Currently reading) The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel van der Kolk

Clearly, I am into reading some depressing stuff! But slowly I’ve found time to read on the subway, when I’m at home, or even outside. And in this reading push I’ve been using physical books instead of my e-reader — I’ve found myself making much more progress. I think the biggest thing has been embracing reading on the subway: there are a few trips I take that are basically just straight shots so reading on them makes a lot of sense. Now … to push myself to read off the subway as well …

museum of the week

Is an aquarium a museum? Well, it certainly has historical exhibits (of fish I guess). It also has live fish. And it’s almost always beautiful.

This week we’re going back to Singapore (as I suspect we will for the next few months), in the low-lit halls of the Oceanarium on Sentosa Island (off the coast of Singapore, which is also an island. ok. no more parentheses from now on. esteemed subscriber eleanor coffin is starting to get agitated). The faces of fish-watchers are lit by the soft glow of jellyfish drifting about in their giant tank, going neither here nor there, waiting for something to take them somewhere.

The aquarium itself takes us down to the ocean floor where there’s a cool skeleton-looking thing with special effects ocean vents. But most interestingly is that they displayed a creature they only labeled as “found off the coast of Taiwan and Japan.”

ITS A VENT

The coolest part about this museum are the huge manta rays floating around the Big Tank ™️. Just like how my favorite Monterey Bay Aquarium has a Big Tank ™️, the Occeanrium’s features many different species of aquatic life making circles around the tank and each other, each species in a pack following an orbit around another. Sometimes they’ll split off and go to another section of the tank which happens to be where the tunnel is. And where some Thai? celebs were filming a TV show.

Visits to the aquarium are usually very peaceful. Something about how dark it is and seeing the purple light of the UV reflect off the coral and onto the lethargic fish makes them super comforting. The warm glow of a hundred jellyfish gently pushing themselves against gravity, toward the light above the surface. Anyway after we got back to the main island we ate stingray and it was damn good.

Well, it tasted like chicken. I’d recommend the Oceanarium!!! It’s a great place to relax on a hectic vacation.

Back to my sister esteemed subscriber Carolyn Chen! She had a great — albeit short — vacation in Hawaii and she has returned to share with us this amazing cow.

Hawaiian grass-fed cattle on Kualoa Ranch.
cow = pipi in Hawaiian.
the black cow is black angus (like the steak).
they are all female
