I think being on a boat might be one of my new favorite experiences of all time. Sitting in the sun, soaking in the beautiful scenery of Lake George while watching esteemed subscriber Leo Liu freeze his ass off trying to water ski.

The beauty of upstate New York's rolling forested hills is something still foreign to me. My eyes looked down into the valley, feeling for the familiar landscape of California's mountains and hills of golden and dry grass but instead being regaled by the verdant of the Northeast.

Captained by esteemed subscriber Dane Gailitis, our trusty rented watercraft cut through the choppy morning waters in search of a bit of sunshine to warm up in. I had made the very uncalculated error of not bringing a hoodie but the thin one I bought from Walmart that morning seemed to be doing the trick.

Esteemed subscribers Akshay Pawar, Matt Jewison, Leo Liu and I watched the chop subside as Dane guided us to a sunny patch and we all just spent a few minutes relaxing in the sun.

museum of the week

After a movie I decided to stop by the American Folk Art Museum! Folk as a category has always been a little confusing to me (the line between folk and country music at a glance seems quite blurred). But maybe that was because I wasn’t trying to see the art in every day life.

The types of museums I usually go to are a little more spectacular or maybe even exotic-feeling. The Met, for example, is very good at showcasing and displaying art from other civilizations and historical periods. But when I first looked a this quilt, I thought that it was … plain? Normal?

But maybe I was not being open minded enough. That pattern could be someone’s family heirloom — something that’s been passed down from the immigration to America and beyond. And in that, we see the art in the daily colonial American life. Where everything we owned had a bit of personality.
