Happy Monday esteemed subscribers! I’ve been spending the past week or so in the Kingdom of Norway hiking, lollygagging and enjoying the scenery with esteemed subscriber Winnie Li. It’s an amazing and beautiful place that feels so intrinsically tied to nature. And the LIGHT! The way the late afternoon light lays across the clouds and the trees has finally made me believe that those European painters weren’t just making shit up.

I’ve been documenting the past week’s adventures in several blog posts but something that is not in these via my fascination with the electrication of Norwegian cars! It feels like every other car in Norway is electric — and definitely every taxi. The newer work vans are basically all conversions of that electric Volkswagen van too!!

More interestingly, I was able to see a BYD car in real life! For those not in the know this is a Chinese EV manufacturer which is banned from importing the car into the US — simply because it might be too good. From a casual glance it looks pretty sleek and luxurious, and the brakes look very performance/premium-esque as well.

The charging infra has been pretty good up here in Northern Norway as well. Generally the most powerful ones were from a company called EVINY or from one of the Tesla Superchargers. I had tried to use a Norwegian company called Mer but the chargers I came across were frankly too slow for any kind of use.

Anyway I had a great time and can’t wait to edit the photos from this trip! And also write up all the museums I went to!!! see you guys later!

Ok quick list of cars I saw:

VW Buzz Work Van: I think these were marketed as the revival of those iconic surf vans. That has not really panned out well if I remember correctly. This seems to be the best use for them in the meantime.

VW e-Up: very cute looking hatchback! Not sure how it works but seems fine

Honda e: this is another super cute and mini hatchback! I feel like it’s super practical for city living — if there were more chargers in the city this would be perfect.

Tesla Model whatever: saw a bunch of them. Makes sense. Happy I didn’t see more!

Toyota BZ4x/Subaru Solterra: these brands teamed up to make an extremely mid electric car. Even funnier is seeing them parked next to each other!

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: meh

Vauxhall Astra: apparently this is a British brand! Very cool logo, saw it around a few times

VW on left, Chevy on right. Also pictured: Circle K charging???

Chevy Puma EV: why do you not sell this in the US, Chevy!!!

VW GTX: saw this around Oslo, it’s like an electric crossover type shit.

Polestar 4: a Nordic brand! Well technically it’s owned by China but who’s countinggggg.

Random KIA EV: not sure which one this one is.

museum of the week

animal of the week

Esteemed subscriber and I believe first-time contributor to this section Peter Waller delivers a gorgeous black and white photo of an amphibian. Thank you Peter!

In the spring my friend took me out into a swamp at night to go looking for spring peepers and other critters. This is one of the peepers we found. Such a small guy for such a loud peep.

Send me your animal photos at ryan@torrtle.co OR at this form https://forms.gle/NT3nSkKVbpkjCr1u8!
