Happy Cinco de Mayo, esteemed subscribers!

To tell the truth, I don’t know what spring is. But if I ever had to guess, it would feel like this weekend. Sometimes it’s cloudy, but the air is warm enough to wear long pants and a t-shirt. The humidity is nice but it’s cool enough to prevent you from sweating.

I love seeing the shady green trees sway with the wind in Court Square while the 7 train rumbles by. Sure, the flowers are planted by the city, but don’t we all love seeing tulips??

There be a sense of joy here. Of relief!

People are eating outside again. Life feels like it’s moving again. The sun shines and the rain falls.

And this cat just sleeps through it all.

museum of the week

I was in the Astoria area recently and decided to take some time to visit some of the wonderful Queens-located museums — and one that I see referred to a lot on Facebook marketplace. The Noguchi museum!

Woah, you say. Is that a used lamp made out of paper for $600? Seems like a steal, huh? But anyway titular sculptor and architect (Isamu Noguchi) that created those has his very own gallery and museum in an old factory in Astoria. And thus, I went.

I am going to be honest. I’m not much of a modern art head. It was very hard to look at what at first glance amounted to some peculiarly-shaped rocks.

As I passed by each rock, I tried understanding each one in the context of the area. Like the fountain gurgling water down its sides, or maybe the spire in the garden. I found a fun contrast between two oppositely colored rings (one orange, one black).

But as I sit here writing this all, I really don’t know what I saw. Or if I learned anything. I’m gonna need a modern art interpretation class or something.

For those times you really need to get someone’s attention I guess?
