SUMMER HAS RETURNED IN NEW YORK. I've been spending so much time outside this weekend!!!! I can feel the tan that I lived for 18 years with coming back to me, freeing myself from the pale wretched self I see myself become every winter here in New York.

Life seems to be getting back on track. I find myself disproportionately centering around work during the winters and springs, but the summers are where I finally come out and remember I have hobbies. Like this newsletter! If you read through the past few months of newsletter it's honestly quite depressing. Maybe I should get one of those sun lamps. Or maybe just cook outside more?

Either way it's been awesome seeing the city come alive seemingly once and for all. Sheep Meadow was filled with people tanning and throwing frisbees, and during my first long ride (barring the Five Boro Bike Tour) of the year it was filled with families and groups biking along the West Side Highway.

This summer, I have two main objectives:

  • I will grill a lot. I've been grilling quite a bit thus far but more on that next week!
  • I will be biking a lot! I think I can surpass my yearly total of miles from last year pretty quickly, with a few 50+ mile bike rides planned for the near future!!!

Also, let this be the first mention of the ANNUAL POWERWASHING SUBSCRIBER COOKOUT. To all my esteemed subscribers living in New York, you are all cordially invited to grill with me sometime in June in Long Island City. I will be sending out a more formal announcement with a date soon.

Some lamb skewers I made this weekend!

Let me know if you'd like to join by emailing me at ryan@tortle.co or texting me if you have my number!

animal of the week

Thank you to esteemed subscriber and the GOAT of this section Emi Chan for another submissions! This time she brings bats — I was in the Austin/San Antonio area a few months ago and did not get to see the famous Austin bats, so thanks for sending in this picture!!!

Mexican Free-tailed Bats! 20 million bats spend their summer in the maternity colony at Bracken Cave just north of San Antonio, TX.
