Happy Monday esteemed subscribers! The weather has finally cooled down – an appropriately hot and eventful summer seems to have drawn to a close. Is it here? The end of summer (no, only when I stop hosting grillouts).

Coming from California, I've always taken good weather for granted. Weather where you can go out and just do anything. Back home it would be any given day with the sun out, in New York it would be any day outside of winter.

In Chinese we have a word called 享受 (xiang shou). It means to appreciate, or maybe even more simply to enjoy. It feels like this summer the full weight of this word has finally impressed itself upon me. I can no longer see a beautiful day and simply ignore it -- something must be done with it. It's come in the form of biking 100 miles, a simple dinner with friends, or even just strolling around Brooklyn from one used bookstore to another. Even when the weather was less than ideal, I found myself trekking through torrential downpours and lightning -- simply because I could.

But with all this joy, this severe degree of 享受-ing of the summer, I've been doing a lot of growing. I've biked miles and miles, frolicked in the Arctic Circle, and worked long and late hours.

So even though we're seemingly entering autumn, even though it might rain for a whole week and the weather is a humid and slightly terrible 66 degrees, I am ready for it. I am ready to take a break! Which of course is not what I set myself up for with an October full of travelling and a mega-trip in December.

That's in October though. In the meantime, it's time to organize my money and get my life back in order. Maybe I'll read a book in the morning instead of going on a bike ride, or follow a brief yoga video and drink some coffee.

How are you guys planning on resting? Let me know what you all think!

Seeing us all sign up for half and full marathons in our mid-20s is so fascinating. What about this is so attractive to us? Do we desire accomplishment in some form? Why did you sign up for one?

  • anon registers: Just signed up for another half marathon what am I doing
  • anon feels pain: Tummy hurt
  • anon needs to get their thought out: i think we need to rebrand “data center” as “token factory” because rural America loves factories. For decades American social and economic life has been built around factories. I think if we just called data centers token factories then we would have no problem building them in bulk
