Happy Monday esteemed subscribers! A big ol’ storm passed through this weekend — they call it a nor’easter but I’m not sure what makes it specific to the northeast. The winds were howling, and as usual Eastern Queens flooded quite a bit. But nothing too crazy over here.

After a long day of loafing around, playing board games (Dominion is SO fun) and watching movies, I found myself walking home at around midnight while the storm really started to pick up a bit. I wrapped myself up in my rain jacket and set off through the streets of Queens.

I hadn’t walked too far before realizing that it had been a while since I’d just walked through the rain in a jacket. New Yorkers for the most part seem very tied to the idea of an umbrella — probably for the reason that they would like to seem presentable by the time they reach their target destination. But that night there was no such requirement, there was nothing to dress up for. Just a guy bundled up in his eight year old rain jacket strolling through the rain.

One of my favorite memories as a kid was a crisp fall day with a wind so powerful it seemed like we would all blow away up from the blacktop. We stumbled around like newborn calves as the gusts tussled us about like leaves in the wind. Now older, heavier, and sturdier, my walk was not as disturbed as it might have been as a kid. But the excitement was still there, but with the added pleasure of some rain.

This is to say, walking in the rain with an umbrella is quite unpleasant. Not only do you have to struggle with the umbrella, other people’s struggles make their way to you as well as you attempt to navigate your way thought everyone else’s struggles to keep their umbrellas upright. And at the end of it you’ll end up with a wet shoulder anyway. So what’s the point!

Anyway hope everyone in the area of the storm stayed safe! Fall is a great time to rest and it definitely provided me some time for some relaxation. I’ll be posting back next week with some exciting news — I hope to see you all then!
