Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I'm sure everyone is very full and lazy after that insane holiday meal you just had (or didn't have). I had one but instead of feeling lazy for some reason I was feeling very ... motivated.
The day before Thanksgiving, I was assembling lunch for me and visitor/esteemed subscriber Connie Liou when I found H-Mart's tofu soup kit. Which is basically just a kit with some paste and tofu and all you need to do is boil all the contents in water.
Just boil? I thought. That 's it? ... WHAT ELSE CAN I DOOOOO
48 hours later, I have too many dumplings to count and enough oil rice to feed a family. The bottom of my palm has a slight ache as I type this out, after succumbing to my stubborn tendencies and making my own dumpling wrappers (300g flour 160 g cold water 5g salt). At one point. I looked at the giant box of dumpling filling sitting in front of me and wondered if I was ever gonna make it through all of it.
But through persistence, enough food to never cook again was successfully made.
That hasn't been the only thing I've eaten/made lately! Thanks to esteemed subscribers and roommates Magdalene Lam and Stephen Davis I've gone on a few small food adventures:
- Making hot chocolate — Stephen and Mag got some nice chocolate from a friend so they invited me to make some hot chocolate with them. Fun! Except we forgot that chocolate that's already been made has oil/butter in it. Which caused some interesting clumps and oil separation and visible confusion. We got it figured out though B).
- Union Square winter market birria grilled choice — This was apparently viral on TikTok so I joined them on their quest to try it out. The winter market itself was very fun, something about seeing all the sellers there and the hordes of tourists and shoppers desperate to get some holiday gift shopping in before going back to work on Monday made the mood very holiday-like. The birria grilled cheese itself was pretty ok. It was a lot saltier than the birria tacos that I got at the food truck near my old place in Sunnyvale, but it was a fun experience nonetheless.
museum of the week: postal museum in tokyo
I am very tired so I am gonna phone this section in sorry guys
- best museum i went to in tokyo
- located on the 9th (?) floor at the Tokyo Skytree! It's very small but still very informative
- i liked how there was direction in the exhibits and how it explained things really well in english as well as japanese
- i am noticing that japanese museums really just like to put things up and have people just look at them
- favorite part 1: the collection of postal worker hats!
- favorite part 2: they had a huge stamp collection
