I have returned from my great outdoors expedition! Calgary is a very average place, but the surrounding national parks are not! I spent a few days with esteemed subscriber Vic Dong exploring the nature in and around Banff National Park, hiking and staring at lakes while getting tremendously fit from the 2000-foot ascents in 2 miles.
I don't think I've ever had views of the valley like that (I've never made it to the little Yosemite Valley), the lakes had some of the most beautiful views I had ever seen with rivers coursing with such a bright pastel blue you'd think the scene was a badly edited photo.
It was a dream vacation as a photographer, even without sticking around for golden hour or anything. But the most important part was all the poutine I ate.
TLDR: I created a sub-series documenting my poutine exploits out in the wilds of Canada and you can read them here on my website! It's highly recommended to read them from start to finish so you can start with numero uno!

animal of the week
When I was drinking tea next to Lake Agnes in Banff, there were these little squirrel/chipmunk things that came around trying to steal food from us — one of them even crawling onto my hand. I watched them as I sipped on my tea as they begged for attention and crumbs from other hikers, some entertaining their demands and others trying to shoo them away.
Send me your animals at ryan@torrtle.co!
