Some esteemed subscribers will know that I started playing this Chinese RPG game called Genshin Impact during the pandemic. Since it's made in China, most of the characters are built from the perspective of Chinese culture (but the foreign culture research is usually pretty good) and it also means that the storylines are usually meant to be read in Chinese (opinion here).

Being the Chinese learner that I am — I turned my game language into Chinese after playing the game in English. And I have learned that I am illiterate.

Let's back it up: I definitely can hold my own in chat rooms, WeChat exchanges and casual conversation. I could probably do ok in a business setting. But if you ask me to read literary level or formal Chinese — no can do there. Especially in TRADITIONAL! There are characters there with more strokes (meaning literally strokes required to write a character) than the whole previous sentence. And Genshin Impact is full of those. It takes me a full hour to get through my daily commissions since I have to stop and review each work I don't know to get the f ull context.

To the anonymous subscriber who brought up Criminal Minds: I do agree with you at this point. I didn't even get very far (maybe season 5?) before I felt like the show got too boring — I somehow got through NCIS than CM.

animal of the week

From my hike last week. It always intrigues me how calm the deer are around humans. I must've gotten within five feet of it before it's survival instincts kicked in!
